Icy Roads Maryland Winter Storm 2025

BALTIMORE, Md. — A sudden shift in weather patterns is set to bring icy conditions to Maryland, with meteorologist Tony Pann warning residents to prepare for freezing rain and sleet starting Wednesday night and lasting into Thursday morning.

Unseasonably warm temperatures on Tuesday, which reached the upper 50s, will give way to a cold front moving through the region. By Wednesday, temperatures are expected to drop into the upper 20s and 30s, setting the stage for potential ice accumulation on untreated roads and hazardous travel conditions.

“The warm temperatures today may actually help prevent a big ice storm tomorrow night,” Pann said. “If it had been in the 20s today and all the surfaces were cold leading into this storm, I think it would be a much bigger problem.”

The storm is expected to bring light snow or snow flurries by Wednesday afternoon, with freezing rain and sleet developing after 5 or 6 p.m. The icy conditions are predicted to persist through early Thursday morning, particularly around Baltimore and areas to the north. Pann cautioned that untreated roads could become slippery, making travel dangerous.

“Travel tomorrow night is going to be pretty slippery, and that will last,” Pann said. “The freezing rain situation will continue all the way into at least early Thursday morning.”

By Thursday afternoon, the rain is expected to clear, with temperatures rising to around 42 degrees. However, another storm system is forecast to arrive on Saturday, potentially bringing more snow, sleet, and freezing rain. The weather is expected to clear up by Sunday.

Residents are advised to monitor updates and prepare for possible power outages and difficult travel conditions as the storm approaches.
