Matt Damon Shirtless The Odyssey Set Italy

Favignana, ItalyMatt Damon showcased a dramatic transformation on the set of Christopher Nolan‘s upcoming film, The Odyssey, where he assumes the iconic role of Odysseus. Photographs released from the shoot on March 25 revealed the 54-year-old actor in a rugged costume, highlighted by a long gray beard and a chiseled physique, as he filmed on the picturesque shores of Favignana Island.

Damon was spotted wearing tattered beige pants and filming shirtless, embodying the resilience of his character from Homer's epic poem. The actor expressed considerable dedication to the role, evident in his physical preparations and transformation.

During the shoot, Damon was joined by co-star Zendaya, who is rumored to portray the Goddess of Wisdom, Athena. Dressed in a flowing Grecian-style dress, Zendaya appeared in high spirits, engaging with the crew as preparations were made for her scenes. The 28-year-old Euphoria star wore her hair in an elegant braided style.

The film, set to hit theaters on July 17, 2026, boasts a star-studded cast, which includes Tom Holland as Telemachus, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, and Lupita Nyong'o. Each actor is expected to bring their unique flair to the legendary narrative of Odysseus’s perilous journey home following the Trojan War.

Filming for The Odyssey began in February 2025, and production is expected to span stunning locations across Italy, Greece, Morocco, and the U.K. Notably, Favignana provides a scenic backdrop that is believed to have inspired elements of Homer’s tale.

Universal Pictures has announced that Nolan’s adaptation will utilize innovative IMAX film technology, marking a first for this foundational saga. Fans are anticipating a visually immersive experience as the story unfolds on the big screen.

Damon has a history of physically demanding roles, and his close friend, Ben Affleck, noted the rigorous stunt training required for him to prepare. “I was talking to Matt about his upcoming project with Chris Nolan, and it’s obvious he’s pushing himself to the limits,” Affleck said in a recent interview.

In a previous discussion about the challenges of training for such roles, Damon candidly reflected, “Unless it’s your job, three hours a day in the gym just isn’t enjoyable. It involves sacrifices in your diet and lifestyle that can be pretty tough.”

Nolan, known for his visually stunning works such as Oppenheimer and Inception, is expected to deliver a retelling of The Odyssey that resonates with modern audiences while remaining faithful to its mythological roots. The film promises to explore themes of heroism, loyalty, and the struggles against divine will through Odysseus’s turbulent adventures.

As anticipation builds, behind-the-scenes glimpses reveal a positive working environment among the cast, with Damon and Zendaya often seen enjoying lighter moments between takes. Zendaya is also preparing for her return as MJ in Spider-Man 4 and filming the third season of Euphoria, making for a busy year ahead.
