LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Matthew Lillard, known for his iconic role as Stuart ‘Stu‘ Macher in the original 1996 ‘Scream’ film, is set to return to the franchise for the upcoming ‘Scream 7,’ slated for release on Feb. 27, 2026. The announcement, confirmed by sources close to the production, has sparked speculation about how his character, presumed dead, will re-enter the story.

Lillard’s character, Stu, was last seen in the first ‘Scream’ film, where he was seemingly killed after a TV was dropped on his head during a climactic confrontation with Neve Campbell‘s Sidney Prescott. The actor’s return raises questions about the narrative direction of the new installment, which is being directed by franchise creator Kevin Williamson and written by Guy Busick.

‘Scream 7’ will also feature legacy cast members Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox, alongside newcomers Isabel May, Mckenna Grace, and Mark Consuelos. The film is produced by James Vanderbilt, William Sherak, and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment.

The ‘Scream’ franchise, which began in 1996, has become a cultural phenomenon, grossing over $900 million worldwide. The most recent installment, ‘Scream VI,’ released in March 2023, holds the record for the highest domestic box office gross in the series at $108 million.

Lillard’s career skyrocketed after his role in ‘Scream,’ leading to prominent roles in ‘Scooby-Doo,’ ‘She's All That,’ and ‘Five Nights at Freddy's.’ His return to the horror franchise is expected to draw significant attention from fans and critics alike.

Meanwhile, Scott Foley, who played Roman Bridger in ‘Scream 3,’ is also confirmed to return for ‘Scream 7.’ Foley’s character, believed to have died in the third film, adds another layer of mystery to the upcoming sequel. Plot details remain tightly under wraps, but the involvement of both Lillard and Foley suggests a focus on Sidney Prescott’s family and legacy.

The film’s production team has yet to reveal how these characters will be reintroduced, leaving fans to speculate about potential twists, such as secret twins or supernatural elements. The return of these fan-favorite actors underscores the enduring appeal of the ‘Scream’ franchise as it continues to evolve.
