Los Angeles, CA — Apple TV+ is slated to release its new drama, “The Lost Bus,” this fall, showcasing the true story of a heroic rescue during California’s catastrophic 2018 Camp Fire. The film features Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey as Kevin McCay, a school bus driver who embarks on a perilous journey to save 23 children and their teacher, Mary Ludwig, played by America Ferrera.

The teaser trailer reveals the tension of the situation as a dispatcher announces, “There’s a situation at Ponderosa Elementary. There are 23 kids stranded. Is there anybody in the area that can pick them up?” McConaughey’s character responds by grabbing a walkie-talkie, preparing to face the flames.

Directed by Paul Greengrass and co-written by Greengrass and Brad Ingelsby, the film derives its narrative from Lizzie Johnson’s critically acclaimed 2021 book, “Paradise: One Town’s Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire.” The Camp Fire, which ignited in November 2018, resulted in 86 fatalities and devastated over 150,000 acres in Butte County.

“The Lost Bus highlights the story of quiet heroism — people joining forces amidst unthinkable circumstances,” said Greengrass. Other cast members include Yul Vazquez, Ashlie Atkinson, and Spencer Watson.

With a focus on the harrowing moments during the escape, the film aims not only to depict the immediate danger but also to delve into the emotional aftermath experienced by survivors. It is produced by Ingelsby, Gregory Goodman, Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions, and Jamie Lee Curtis of Comet Pictures.

As anticipation builds, “The Lost Bus” is positioned as both a gripping survival thriller and a poignant tribute to the everyday heroism displayed during one of America’s worst natural disasters.
