Mavericks Acquire Forward PJ Washington in Trade with Hornets
The Dallas Mavericks have made a significant move to address their need for a starting forward by acquiring PJ Washington from the Charlotte Hornets. The trade, first reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic, involves the Mavericks sending Grant Williams, Seth Curry, and a first-round pick to the Hornets in exchange for Washington.
Washington, a 25-year old restricted free agent last summer, signed a three-year, $46.5 million contract with the Hornets. Despite having limited market interest due to his restricted status, Washington has been a solid contributor for Charlotte throughout his career.
The trade sends Williams, who was acquired by the Mavericks in the offseason, to Charlotte. Although there were high hopes for Williams joining the Mavericks, he has struggled to find consistent playing time and has fallen out of the rotation recently.
Curry, who returned to Dallas in the offseason, also becomes part of the deal. Despite his previous success with the Mavericks, Curry has struggled to secure a consistent role off the bench.
One key piece of the trade is the first-round pick that the Mavericks are including. Currently, it is the only first-round pick at their disposal, which may impact their ability to make additional moves. However, with the addition of Washington and center Daniel Gafford, the Mavericks have taken steps to strengthen their frontcourt.
The team’s pursuit of Washington has been rumored for some time, and the trade signifies their commitment to addressing their frontcourt needs. Washington’s versatility and scoring ability will be valuable additions to the Mavericks’ lineup.
As the details of the trade are finalized, the Mavericks continue their efforts to improve and compete in the highly competitive Western Conference.
