Max Cancels ‘Velma’ Animated Series After Two Seasons
Max has announced that it will not be renewing the adult animated series ‘Velma‘ for a third season. This decision comes after the completion of the show’s second season, which consisted of a total of ten episodes and was released on April 25, 2024.
The series, a reinterpretation of the classic Scooby-Doo character Velma Dinkley, was created by Mindy Kaling and Charlie Grandy. “Over the past two seasons, Mindy and Charlie have created an incredibly fun and fresh world within the iconic whodunit franchise,” Max stated. “While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we thank them for their compelling coming-of-age storytelling, unrivaled clues, and hilarious hijinks.”
‘Velma’ distinguished itself from other adaptations by focusing solely on the character Velma, omitting the franchise’s usual titular Great Dane, Scooby-Doo. The show follows Velma’s adventures as she navigates high school life and solves mysteries.
The voice cast included prominent names such as Constance Wu, Sam Richardson, and Glenn Howerton in leading roles. A star-studded roster of guest stars featured Jane Lynch, Wanda Sykes, and “Weird Al” Yankovic, among others. TVLine was the first to report the show’s cancellation.
The series was executive produced by Mindy Kaling, who also voiced the titular character. The animated show’s first season streamed from January to February 2023, with a Halloween special released on October 3, 2024. Despite popular guest appearances and a unique spin on the traditional format, the series did not secure sufficient ratings or critical acclaim to warrant further production.
