Mel Brooks Spaceballs Sequel

HOLLYWOOD, CA — Mel Brooks will reprise his role as Yogurt in a new sequel to the 1987 cult classic “Spaceballs,” Amazon MGM Studios announced Thursday. The film is set for theatrical release in 2027.

Josh Greenbaum will direct the film based on a script co-written by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad, who is also rumored to star. While additional cast details have not yet been revealed, Brooks will return to the role he originally played, described as a humorous twist on Yoda from “Star Wars.”

The new film will follow the original film’s tradition of parodying sci-fi tropes, promising a comedic experience typical of Brooks’ style. Although the plot is still under wraps, it has been playfully described as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.”

The original “Spaceballs” was released by MGM in 1987 and grossed over $38 million at the box office. It featured Bill Pullman as Lone Starr, Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet, John Candy as Barf, and Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa. The film has gained a cult following over the years for its humorous take on iconic sci-fi films such as “Star Wars” and “Alien.”

Mel Brooks, a legendary comedic filmmaker, has won numerous accolades throughout his career, including an Oscar and a coveted EGOT status. His other classic films include “The Producers,” “Blazing Saddles,” and “Young Frankenstein.” He remains an influential figure in Hollywood, continuing to create works that resonate with audiences.

Producers for the upcoming sequel include Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody from Imagine Entertainment, alongside Brooks, Gad, and Greenbaum. Executive producers involve Kevin Salter, Adam Merims, Samit, and Hernandez.

While this sequel marks another entry in Brooks’ expansive career, he emphasizes that its creation comes from a deep appreciation for fan expectations and community engagement.
