Memorial Day Honors Sacrifices of Fallen Service Members Across the Globe

EPINAL, France – On May 25, 2025, representatives from the U.S. Department of Defense, French citizens, and families of fallen service members gathered at Epinal American Cemetery to honor 5,255 American heroes. This Memorial Day Ceremony marked 80 years since the end of World War II.
Brig. Gen. Steven P. Carpenter, the commanding general of the 7th Army Training Command, addressed the crowd for the second year in a row. He noted, “Everyone out there gave their tomorrows, so we could have this beautiful day.” Carpenter emphasized the importance of remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom, peace, and democracy.
Epinal Cemetery, one of two U.S. Battle Monuments Commission-managed sites established by 7th Army troops in 1944, was a fitting venue for honoring the legacy of soldiers. Carpenter expressed gratitude to the French citizens for attending, especially on their Mother’s Day.
“Your presence on these hallowed grounds is a testament to the enduring strength of the U.S. relationship with France,” he said. Among the attendees were the Moore family, honoring Staff Sgt. Oscar McIver and Tech Sgt. Thomas McIver, along with other families celebrating their fallen heroes.
Chaplain (Capt.) Emeka Okwuosa of the U.S. Air Force presented a benediction, stating, “We gather not only to honor the brave men and women who laid down their lives but also to reflect on the values they fought to protect.” Taps was played by Sgt. Marshall Klimmek alongside the U.S. Navy color guard.
After the ceremony, U.S. and French officials raised the American flag, a symbol of hope and unity. James Williamson, superintendent of the Epinal American Cemetery, remarked, “Their sacrifices shaped our world. We must ensure that their stories are passed down to future generations.”
Carpenter concluded by urging the crowd to honor the sacrifices of those before us. “Together, the U.S. and our indispensable Allies continue to demonstrate the strength and dedicated resolve that emerged from WWII,” he said.
