Mercy Ships Fundraising Event

HOUSTON, Texas — Mercy Ships’ annual Cargo Day aims to exceed last year’s record of $2.2 million as pledges from the maritime community increase. The initiative, which began on November 5, runs until the end of the year and has already raised more than $1.6 million, putting it on track to reach a target of $2.5 million.

Cargo Day is one of the shipping industry’s key charitable events, having launched in 2016. It channels freight commissions, fixture revenues, and direct contributions to support Mercy Ships’ hospital vessels, including the Africa Mercy and the Global Mercy, which is the world’s largest non-governmental hospital ship.

Since its inception, over 150 companies have participated in Cargo Day, resulting in approximately $15 million raised to date. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the campaign, giving it added emotional significance.

The initiative was originally proposed by the late Tim Webb of BRS, who encouraged tanker charterers to offer “Mercy Cargoes.” Brokers were motivated to donate 50% of their commission, with charterers pledging to match this contribution.

Initially focused on the tanker market, Cargo Day has expanded to include shipowners, shipbuilders, terminals, agents, suppliers, and service providers. Many companies now run their own fundraisers or pledge fixed amounts.

The funds raised support thousands of free surgeries annually, from cataract and cleft lip procedures to more complex orthopaedic and maxillofacial operations. They also fund Mercy Ships’ medical training programs, which enhance the skills of hundreds of African healthcare workers, contributing to long-term capacity building.

Participating companies gain recognition through the official Cargo Day website, highlighting the industry’s collective support.
