Met Gala 2025: Celebrating Black Dandyism in Fashion’s Biggest Night

NEW YORK, NY – The Met Gala 2025 took place on May 5, showcasing Black dandyism and celebrating the theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” This year’s event marked a significant moment, highlighting the elegance and creativity of Black men in fashion.

Actress Sydney Sweeney dazzled in a black beaded Miu Miu gown, stating it was her third appearance in the designer. She described her outfit as a tribute to Hollywood icon Kim Novak for her upcoming role in the film “Scandalous.” Sweeney expressed her excitement about bringing the story of Black dandyism to life through this fashion event.

Co-chair Colman Domingo made a bold statement with two different looks during the gala. Initially, he stepped onto the blue carpet wearing a royal blue gown-like piece adorned with white lace. He later revealed a sharp black-and-white blazer accentuated by an oversized boutonniere. Domingo shared that his color choice was a nod to his mother’s favorite hue and emphasized the importance of storytelling through fashion.

Pharrell Williams, another co-chair of the gala, used the occasion to honor the working-class Black men who have shaped fashion. He wore a custom Louis Vuitton ensemble embellished with 15,000 pearls and proclaimed, “I’m inspired by the working class because that’s where I come from.”

The evening also featured appearances from numerous celebrities, including Zendaya, who is renowned for her fashion sense, and model Christian Latchman, dressed in a striking white suit embellished with a flowing train. Latchman is prominently featured in the Met’s upcoming exhibit highlighting Black tailoring.

The event not only upheld its fun tradition but also faced challenges with rain affecting the arrivals. However, umbrellas and crucial cover-ups ensured that the festivities continued without major interruption. Guest arrivals commenced at 5:30 PM ET, with many stars arriving fashionably late.

This year, the Met Gala broke records, generating $31 million before the actual event began. This gala holds a significant financial role in supporting the Costume Institute’s operations. “It serves as an opportunity for celebration and support,” stated museum CEO Max Hollein.

LeBron James, although not physically present due to injury, expressed his disappointment but noted his wife’s attendance would symbolize their participation. Savannah James attended in his stead, dubbed as the “powerful queen”.

The iconic gala also highlighted themes of diversity, equity, and inclusion through its fashion showcases, promoting narratives that challenge and redefine societal standards.

As rain fell, beautifully embellished daffodils adorned the steps leading to the venue, reflecting this year’s vibrant color palette. The Met Gala continues to lead the way in pushing boundaries within the fashion industry.
