Edwin Díaz Mets Closer Free Agency

LAS VEGAS — The New York Mets may face a tough offseason as closer Edwin Díaz enters free agency for the first time. The 32-year-old, who is testing the market after a standout season, could be targeted by several teams looking for a high-impact reliever.

Díaz’s impressive tenure with the Mets included a stellar performance last season, where he saved 28 games with a 1.63 ERA. After opting out of his existing contract worth $38 million over the next two years, he is eyeing a five-year deal similar to his previous $102 million contract signed in November 2022.

The Toronto Blue Jays, freshly stung from a disappointing playoff performance, are reportedly interested in Díaz. Following their loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers during Game 7 of the World Series, the Jays could look to enhance their bullpen by signing a proven closer.

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns is known for his calculated approach and may consider alternatives to Díaz in a crowded free-agent market. Stearns said he is not afraid to let Díaz go if it means avoiding overpaying for a player increasingly in his 30s. “There is no player we can’t live without,” Stearns remarked.

Díaz’s agent recently met with Blue Jays officials during the general managers’ meetings, indicating their serious interest. However, other teams, including the Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees, are also eyeing the star closer. The Braves are positioned to fortify lineup gaps, while the Yankees may be looking for additional bullpen strength amid their own free-agent pursuits.

Despite his connections to New York and the Mets organization, Díaz aims to weigh all offers seriously. “I want to see how teams value me this offseason,” he said at the MLB Awards where he received the Trevor Hoffman Award for National League Reliever of the Year. “Winning is my priority.”

If Díaz departs, the Mets could pivot to a variety of other closers available in the market. However, with his proven track record and popularity among fans, his exit would sting.

The offseason is just beginning, and the outcome of Díaz’s free agency will significantly impact the 2026 season for all parties involved. As teams prepare their bids, the Mets will closely monitor the market to decide on their best course of action.
