Michael Alaimo, Actor Known for ‘Space Jam,’ Dies at 86

Burbank, California — Michael Alaimo, an accomplished theater and film actor, passed away on May 2 at the age of 86. His daughter, Gabriella Alaimo Thomas, a veteran TV PR executive, confirmed the news. Although details about the cause of death were not released, an official statement noted he “passed away peacefully.”
Alaimo was known for his roles in several notable films, including “Space Jam,” where he starred alongside Michael Jordan, Wayne Knight, and Bill Murray. He also appeared in titles such as “Mr. Mom,” “The China Syndrome,” and “All I Want for Christmas.” His film career spanned decades and showcased his versatility as an actor.
On television, Alaimo became a familiar face with appearances in multiple hit series, including “Cheers,” “The Wonder Years,” “Scrubs,” “Barney Miller,” and “Betty White’s Off Their Rockers.” His extensive work made him a beloved figure in both film and television.
Before achieving success in Hollywood, Alaimo studied theater at Brooklyn College. He was actively involved in Joseph Papp’s Shakespeare Festival in Central Park from 1961 to 1964, leading a commedia dell’arte troupe while also engaging in political activism with East Harlem’s Gut Theatre.
He later moved to San Francisco, where he toured with the anti-war show “F.T.A.” and eventually relocated to Los Angeles in 1973. Within the vibrant entertainment scene of Los Angeles, Alaimo got his break with roles in shows like “The Six Million Dollar Man,” “Cannon,” and “Harry O.”
Alaimo is survived by his wife, Louise; daughters Gabriella and Giovanna; son-in-law David; and granddaughters Isabella and Malia. His legacy in the entertainment industry will be remembered for its depth and creativity.
