Michael Essien Faces Financial Turmoil: Multi-Million Dollar Properties at Risk of Auction
Former Ghana national team captain, Michael Essien, is currently grappling with significant financial troubles as two of his premier properties face the risk of being auctioned off following a court directive.
The impending sale, sanctioned by the Deputy Sheriff of the High Court’s Commercial Division on June 12, 2024, involves luxurious properties located in prestigious areas of Accra, Ghana.
The properties in question are situated at Stephen Quarshie Crescent, East Legon, House Number 9, and House Number 204/205 in Trassaco (Phase 2), Adjiringano, as reported by the well-known Ghanaian publication, The Daily Guide Network.
Notably, one of these estates carries a valuation between $20 million and $30 million, as disclosed by an unnamed auctioneer.
This financial downturn comes as a surprise given Essien’s successful football career, which included stints at major European clubs and substantial earnings.
Ghanaian journalist, Saddick Adams, offered insights into the situation, clarifying misconceptions about Essien’s financial obligations. Adams highlighted that the financial challenge stemmed from a mortgage agreement signed during Essien’s playing days and not from any loans.
Essien had been diligently managing payments incrementally but unfortunately, payments lapsed, prompting either the property owner or the financing bank to reclaim the properties, Adams elaborated, as reported by Ghanaweb.
Essien’s journey from a promising talent at the 1999 FIFA U-17 World Cup to a revered midfielder in Europe has been a tale of remarkable achievements interspersed with recent financial hurdles.
His career trajectory saw him make an impact with clubs like Manchester United, Bastia, Lyon, and Chelsea, where he amassed an impressive list of accolades including the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, Europa League, League Cup, and Community Shield trophies.
Despite his illustrious career, Essien’s post-retirement period has been overshadowed by these financial challenges. He also represented Ghana at the FIFA World Cup in 2006 and 2014 before retiring from international football in 2018.
