Michigan State Football Rivalry

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State’s football team is struggling as it prepares for a crucial rivalry game against No. 25 Michigan on Saturday night.

After a tough 38-13 loss to No. 2 Indiana last week, the Spartans (3-4, 0-4 Big Ten) are on a four-game losing streak, raising questions about coach Jonathan Smith‘s future. During the Indiana game, senior wide receiver Elijah Sarratt caught two touchdown passes from quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who completed 24 of 28 passes for 332 yards.

Smith highlighted missed opportunities during the game, particularly a key moment when his team failed to tackle Indiana’s tight end Riley Nowakowski on a short catch. That play allowed the Hoosiers to change the momentum, leading to an easy touchdown. “We need to be able to play with great leverage and get into the right spots,” Smith said.

As the Spartans continue to grapple with various challenges, they face a Michigan team that boasts a strong run game led by true freshman Bryce Underwood. The Wolverines have defeated Michigan State in their last three matchups and pose a different set of obstacles than Indiana did.

With only five forced turnovers this season, Michigan State’s defense has struggled to make impactful plays. Furthermore, the absence of veteran starters has compounded their issues, allowing eight explosive plays this season, significantly more than last year.

Smith acknowledged the need for a better defensive performance against an improved Michigan offense. “We have to go lower on tackles, especially against larger athletes,” he pointed out.

As Michigan State gets ready to host its rival, the pressure is on to find a way to halt its losing streak. Smith is focused on turning around the momentum, but the Spartans will need to find a way to execute better in crucial moments. The outcome will ultimately depend on their performance on the field.
