Michigan State’s Quarterback Hurt, Freshman Takes Over Mid-Game

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State‘s football team faced a tough situation Saturday when starting quarterback Aidan Chiles went down with an injury during the game against UCLA. Chiles, who had been struggling this season, exited after taking a hit to the head while scrambling in the third quarter.
Chiles was evaluated by trainers on the field and then taken to the medical tent for further assessment. This left redshirt freshman Alessio Milivojevic, who had minimal game experience, to lead the team.
Milivojevic’s introduction to the game came after a promising performance in last week’s matchup against Nebraska, where he completed 6 of 7 passes for 71 yards and threw a touchdown. Despite his previous two attempts in his career resulting in interceptions, he showed resilience when called upon.
Coach Jonathan Smith expressed confidence in Milivojevic, noting his preparation and commitment. “He stepped up in a big moment,” Smith said after Milivojevic’s performance last week. “It’s rewarding to see him execute under pressure.”
Chiles, a highly-regarded recruit who transferred from Oregon State, has been under scrutiny for his performance this season. Before the injury against UCLA, he completed 63 percent of his passes for 953 yards and nine touchdowns. However, he has also thrown three interceptions and struggled with consistency.
As the game progressed, the Spartans faced mounting pressure and a 31-7 deficit after UCLA’s scoring drive. Chiles remained on the sideline without his helmet, confirming that he would not return.
Milivojevic’s first chance in the game was rocky, as he was unable to complete his first two attempts, leading to a turnover on downs. As the season progresses, his development could prove crucial for Michigan State, who currently holds a record of 3-2 overall and 0-2 in the Big Ten.
