Mickey 17 to Stream on HBO Max Beginning May 23

LOS ANGELES, CA — The much-anticipated film “Mickey 17” will begin streaming on HBO Max starting May 23. Directed by Bong Joon Ho, known for his Oscar-winning film “Parasite,” this sci-fi comedy features Robert Pattinson in the lead role as Mickey Barnes, an expendable worker on a dangerous mission to colonize the icy planet Niflheim.
Based on the novel “Mickey 7” by Edward Ashton, the film’s plot revolves around Mickey’s unique ability: he can be cloned every time he dies during his perilous tasks. However, the situation complicates when two versions of Mickey wake up simultaneously, prompting him to contend with the complexities of his dual existence.
<p"Mickey 17" premiered at the 75th Berlin Film Festival in February and was released in the U.S. on March 7, where it opened to disappointing numbers. Despite an opening weekend gross of $19 million, the film struggled at the box office, with total earnings around $132 million against a $120 million budget.
Critics have mixed opinions about the film, with Variety’s chief film critic Peter Debruge describing its themes as “recycled” and questioning the efficacy of its allegories. The ensemble cast includes Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo.
The film’s linear premiere will follow on May 24 at 7:40 p.m. ET. Although it may not have garnered the box office success Warner Bros. hoped for, “Mickey 17” is poised for a second chance as it becomes available for streaming.
