Midlands Braces for Arctic Blast, Potential Snowfall
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WLTX) – The Midlands region is preparing for a prolonged cold snap and potential snowfall as an arctic air mass settles over the area, bringing freezing temperatures and hazardous conditions. The National Weather Service has issued cold weather advisories and a winter storm watch, warning residents to brace for the coldest temperatures since January 2010.
Daytime highs on Monday are expected to reach only the upper 30s, with overnight lows plunging into the teens. Wind chill values could drop below freezing, making it feel even colder and increasing the risk of hypothermia. “Very cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure,” the National Weather Service cautioned.
Adding to the winter weather concerns, a wintry precipitation event is forecasted for Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning. While the exact track and intensity of the system remain uncertain, current models predict a dusting to up to 2 inches of snow, with the highest accumulations expected along the I-95 corridor. “There’s still some uncertainty about the exact track and intensity of the system,” said a WLTX meteorologist.
If snow does fall, freezing temperatures will make it difficult for snow or slush to melt immediately, leading to slippery roads and potential travel disruptions. “Any precipitation that melts during the day will freeze overnight when the temperature drops below freezing,” warned Live 5 First Alert Meteorologist Bill Walsh.
Residents are urged to take protective actions, including bringing pets indoors, protecting outdoor plants, and stocking up on essentials. School districts in the Lowcountry have yet to announce whether classes will be held or switched to eLearning due to the wintry weather.
Forecasters are also monitoring a second wave of wintry precipitation that could affect the area on Thursday. “Winter weather will affect the area on Tuesday and Wednesday with a possible second shot coming on Thursday,” Walsh added.
As the Midlands prepares for this extended period of cold and potential snow, officials emphasize the importance of staying informed and limiting travel during hazardous conditions. “Prep now for the ultra-cold snap!” Walsh tweeted, reminding residents of the dangerous cold expected throughout the week.
