Mike Carson’s Creative Vision Shines in Kendrick Lamar’s Grand National Tour

Los Angeles, California – Mike Carson, a key player behind the scenes, has made waves as the creative director for Kendrick Lamar‘s ‘Grand National Tour.’ Known for his work in theater, Carson brings a unique vision to each performance.
Carson’s journey began in his childhood, inspired by his experiences watching plays in Chicago. Now, as Lamar’s longtime production designer, he collaborates closely with Lamar and Dave Free, co-founders of pgLang, which they started in 2020.
The ‘Grand National Tour,’ which showcases Lamar and SZA, features an impressive blend of live performance and visual art. The show incorporates large-scale installations, including art by renowned contemporary collagist Lauren Halsey, creating a stimulating environment that reimagines stage design.
“I like some tension in there, but everything gets crafted, from the setlist to the color of the lights,” Carson explained. The creativity extends to the thematic elements, such as the 1987 Buick Grand National GNX, a centerpiece of the show that was repurposed from the Super Bowl performance earlier this year.
Fans can expect visual motifs that are both abstract and meaningful. A surreal blend of cultural references, including nods to ‘The Last Supper,’ enhances Lamar’s lyrics, showcasing the complexity of American life.
Carson emphasizes the importance of narrative in their performances. “The music becomes the script and gives us an intention of how the show will flow,” he said. His approach applies not just to the visual aspects, but also to the choreography and overall experience of the audience.
With the Grand National Tour kicking off at Soldier Field, fans can look forward to an experience that transcends typical concert performances. Carson’s vision promises to make each show a distinctive celebration of artistry and cultural expression.
