Milan Edges Como 2-1 in Serie A Thriller Amid Key Absences
COMO, Italy — AC Milan overcame a sluggish start to secure a 2-1 victory against Como in a dramatic Serie A clash at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium on Tuesday. Theo Hernandez and Rafael Leao scored crucial goals in the second half to overturn an early deficit, while goalkeeper Mike Maignan made a decisive late save to preserve the win.
Como struck first in the 60th minute through Assane Diao, capitalizing on a defensive lapse by Milan. Theo Hernandez equalized in the 71st minute with a fortunate deflection, and Leao completed the comeback five minutes later with a composed finish. Maignan’s stunning save in the dying moments denied Como a late equalizer, ensuring Milan’s climb to within two points of fifth-placed Juventus.
“This team has heart, but we need to be more consistent,” said Milan coach Sergio Conceiçao. “We showed character to fight back, but we can’t keep starting games like this.”
Milan’s victory came at a cost, as key players Álvaro Morata and Christian Pulisic were ruled out of their upcoming match against Juventus. Morata received a yellow card, triggering a suspension, while Pulisic suffered an injury late in the first half. Defender Malick Thiaw also left the field with an injury, compounding Milan’s defensive concerns.
Como, despite the loss, displayed resilience and tactical discipline. Midfielder Da Cunha and winger Diao were standout performers, while the team’s energetic pressing caused problems for Milan throughout the match. “We played well, but against teams like Milan, small mistakes can cost you,” said Como coach Cesc Fàbregas. “We’ll take the positives and keep fighting for survival.”
The result leaves Como one point above the relegation zone, while Milan remains in contention for a Champions League spot. Both teams face critical fixtures in the coming weeks, with Milan set to face Juventus and Como battling relegation rivals.
