NEW DELHI, India — Miley Cyrus shared the unexpected story of how she was fired from voicing Mavis Dracula in the animated film, Hotel Transylvania, during her appearance on Monica Lewinsky’s Reclaiming podcast on June 10.

Cyrus explained that the incident began when she jokingly gifted her then-boyfriend, Liam Hemsworth, a penis-shaped cake for his birthday. “I was the lead actress in Hotel Transylvania, and they fired me and replaced me because I had made an inappropriate, adult joke,” she said.

Reflecting on her age at the time, Cyrus stated, “I was 18 — so yes, I was fine to work in a kids movie, but I’m not a kid.” She emphasized that her actions were typical for young adults and criticized the disparity between personal life and professional responsibilities. “It’s not that big of a deal. I thought this was a very simple, not vulgar joke,” she added.

Cyrus noted how other girls her age participated in similar humor without facing consequences. She said, “To be fired for regular things that girls my age do—like going to bachelorette parties—is ridiculous. That was in my personal life.”

When asked about the treatment of young public figures today, she suggested that while the scrutiny may have changed slightly, there are still consequences for actions that might not align with audience expectations. “I don’t know if we put our Disney kids on the pedestal the way that we used to, but I think movies still have consequences for their lead actors,” Cyrus concluded.

After Cyrus was dropped from the project, Selena Gomez stepped in to voice Mavis, making the character an iconic part of the series.
