Mindy Kaling Reflects on Ben Affleck’s Reaction to Her Play

Los Angeles, CA – Mindy Kaling sat down for an engaging conversation during the Paley Media Council Series on June 5, 2025. In her discussion, Kaling opened up about Ben Affleck‘s feelings regarding her early career-defining play, ‘Matt & Ben.’
Kaling, who wrote and starred in the play back in 2002, revealed that Affleck is not particularly fond of it. ‘For the record, he’s not, like, crazy about it,’ Kaling stated. The play revolves around a fictionalized account of Affleck’s time as a roommate to Matt Damon, showcasing their experiences in writing ‘Good Will Hunting.’
<pKaling mentioned how the play led to her first big break in television. She revealed that Affleck's connection to her early work has been both humorous and awkward. 'He’s like such a good sport but he had a Christmas party a couple of years ago and I remember going, and he’s like, ‘You still owe me residuals from that play you did,' Kaling recalled with a laugh.
Despite Affleck’s lack of enthusiasm for the play, Kaling expressed gratitude for his good nature. ‘But he’s nice — I would have sued,’ she added.
Kaling also reflected on her absence from acting in recent years, hinting at a return to the screen. ‘I miss it, and I would like to write or co-create a show for me to act in soon,’ she said, mentioning the possibility of reviving projects similar to ‘The Mindy Project.’
The discussion highlighted Kaling’s journey as a creator and actress, illustrating the ups and downs of her career and the humorous interactions she has had with those who shaped her path.
