Mookie Betts Credits Sacramento Tech for World Series Comeback
SACRAMENTO, CA — As the Los Angeles Dodgers prepare to take on the Toronto Blue Jays in the World Series, All-Star outfielder Mookie Betts is recognizing a local sports tech startup for his recent performance upgrade. Core Impact, an Elk Grove-based company, has developed athletic apparel that tracks live muscle performance and offers immediate feedback through a synchronized app.
Founded by Samuel Taylor, who launched the company in August 2020, Core Impact aims to enhance athletic performance and minimize injuries. “Instead of you getting your data in 20 minutes, you get your data in two seconds,” Taylor explained.
Betts, an eight-time All-Star and Dodgers player, became an investor in the startup, appreciating how the technology helps fine-tune athletic movements. “I think it’ll be used across the board in all sports because it’s that good,” Betts said.
The idea for Core Impact originated from a conversation Taylor had during his time as a professional baseball player. In 1994, coach Joe Maddon advised him that understanding what happens inside the body can improve performance. This insight led Taylor to create a platform that makes athletic performance measurable.
Betts started using Core Impact earlier this year when his performance declined. At the All-Star break, he was batting .244, far below his average. Core Impact helped him identify muscle inefficiencies in his swing, leading to significant improvements. “It definitely helped me get on the right track,” Betts said, as he later batted .317 leading into the playoffs.
The company offers its primary product, the “ecosuit,” which incorporates EMG sensors in compression gear to deliver live muscle feedback. Taylor emphasized this technology aims to reduce injury risk and enhance recovery time. “Any athlete that wants to be better than they were yesterday should wear this,” he remarked.
Core Impact’s wearables will be available at the end of October, with prices starting at $1,499. Betts noted his commitment to the company is based not only on the product but also on Taylor’s vision for the future: “It’s more important just to understand the people that I embed with and their viewpoint.”
