Morwell Bowling Club Fire Aftermath

The Morwell Bowling Club has tragically been destroyed by a fire that broke out overnight. Firefighters were called to the scene on Hazelwood Road around 12:30 AM to find flames already consuming the roof, which eventually collapsed.

Captain Shane Mynard from Morwell Fire Rescue Victoria mentioned that despite the team’s efforts, only about 10 percent of the main building was saved. Thankfully, a function room and a green with large plastic shade covers survived the blaze.

Fire crews had to pull back when the roof fell in, resulting in a large section of the building—which measured around 80 meters by 50 meters—being lost to the fire. The good news is that the new multi-million-dollar extension was mostly unaffected, but officials believe the rest of the structure will likely need to be demolished.

Water supply became a major challenge during the firefighting efforts because they were drawing huge amounts of water from the mains. With pressure being low in the older parts of Morwell, they had to call in extra resources, bringing the total to 20 tanker trucks on the ground.

As for the cause of the fire, that remains unknown, but it’s not believed to be suspicious at this stage. Fire investigators, along with the police, are set to look into the situation further.

The bowling club had recently been renovated and had transformed into a busy local restaurant and community hub. Shane Mynard expressed concern about how significant this loss is for the area, highlighting the club’s role in supporting local organizations like football and netball clubs.
