Motagua Faces Cartaginés Without Star Johan Venegas
Tegucigalpa, Honduras – In the lead-up to a crucial match for the Concacaf Champions Cup, Motagua will face a weakened Cartaginés on Tuesday as star forward Johan Venegas has been ruled out due to injury.
Venegas, who shares the top scorer title for Cartaginés in the Copa Centroamericana with five goals, suffered a shoulder dislocation during Saturday’s match against Herediano and underwent surgery. Although he reported that his recovery is progressing well, his absence for the return leg at Estadio Nacional Chelato Uclés offers a tactical advantage for Motagua.
“The operation went very well. Thanks to God, the doctors, and nurses for their skills. I will be back in no time,” said Venegas after the procedure.
In addition to losing their top scorer, Cartaginés is also reeling from a recent defeat to Herediano. The absence of Venegas removes a key offensive reference, experience, and finishing ability, which are vital in a high-pressure match.
However, Motagua is not without its challenges. Luis Vega, who was injured in the classic against Marathón, has been diagnosed with tendinitis in his knee and is expected to be sidelined for four to five weeks. Furthermore, Óscar Discua remains unavailable as he continues rehabilitation following surgery in September.
The match, set for 8:00 p.m., will decide one of the teams qualifying for the Concacaf Champions Cup. Cartaginés currently holds an advantage after winning 1-0 in Costa Rica, and on Tuesday, Motagua will host them at Estadio Nacional Chelato Uclés.
