The Muny to Receive Regional Theatre Tony Award on Broadway’s Biggest Night

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — On Sunday, June 8, theater artists and fans will tune in to watch Broadway’s biggest night—the 2025 Tony Awards. This year, St. Louisans have a special reason to watch the broadcast. The Muny, a local theater, is being honored with the Regional Theatre Tony Award during the 78th annual ceremony.
This prestigious award recognizes The Muny’s exceptional contribution to the American theatre scene, highlighting its commitment to artistic excellence and community engagement for over 100 seasons, according to a press release from The Muny.
The recognition has brought national attention to the beloved theater, with The New York Times noting the unique challenges faced by The Muny. The article states, ‘Missouri is, to put it simply, not New York.’ Rehearsal schedules are tight, and summers in Forest Park can be hot and humid.
Heather Headley, a former Muny cast member from the Caribbean, reflects on her experiences, saying, ‘I know heat. But this is different.’ This feedback illustrates the distinct conditions performers face at The Muny.
Despite these challenges, talented actors continue to flock to St. Louis for the summer season. Jessica Vosk, who has performed at The Muny for the past three summers, pointed out that many Broadway performers share a common experience, stating, ‘You hear from all of the other Broadway performers, word of mouth, “When you’re not doing a Broadway show, where do you work in the summer?” And nine times out of 10, it’s always The Muny.’
Muny President & CEO Kwofe Coleman expressed pride in the theater’s legacy, stating, ‘We have had the unique privilege of enriching millions of lives over the past 107 years — often providing a first taste of the magic of live theatre.’ He added that it is gratifying to receive recognition from peers in the industry.
The 2025 Regional Theatre Tony Award will be presented during The Tony Awards: Act One, a pre-show event available on Pluto. Fans can watch from home or join an event at Ballpark Village, starting at 5 p.m. The gathering will be hosted by Great Day St. Louis’ Laura Hettiger and Missouri-born Broadway star Taylor Louderman.
