Namibia Mourns The Loss Of President Hage Geingob

Namibia is in mourning as the nation faces the loss of President Hage Geingob, who passed away while undergoing medical treatment in Windhoek. Vice-President Nangolo Mbumba shared the heartbreaking news in a statement, expressing that Mr. Geingob’s dear wife, Madame Monica Geingos, and their children were by his side during his final moments.

Mr. Geingob, aged 82, had recently disclosed his cancer diagnosis to the public and had announced plans to travel to the US for treatment, returning to Namibia on 2nd February. Serving his second and final term, Geingob took office as president in 2015. Throughout his political career, he had demonstrated resilience in the face of health challenges, having survived prostate cancer in 2014 and an aortic operation in the previous year.

With presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for November, Namibia stands on the threshold of change and continuity. The governing Swapo party, which has held power since the country’s independence in 1990, has chosen Mrs. Nandi-Ndaitwah, currently Namibia’s deputy prime minister, as its presidential candidate. If elected, she will make history as the first female president of Namibia.
