AUSTIN, Texas — British actress Naomi Ackie shared insights about her role in Bong Joon Ho‘s latest film, ‘Mickey 17,’ during an interview this week. The film features Robert Pattinson as Mickey, the main character, who is on a quest to leave Earth aboard a colony ship.

Ackie portrays Nasha, a security officer navigating her own complexities while supporting Mickey. Ackie expressed her admiration for the character, describing Nasha as ‘full of contradictions.’ ‘When I first read the script, it was riveting on two fronts: the overarching story and Nasha’s unique character arc,’ she said.

‘She challenges the norms of her role in security while simultaneously being a fierce lover with a temperamental side,’ Ackie added. ‘Playing someone so liberated right after my previous role’s self-judgment was refreshing.’ Nasha’s character contrasts with Mickey, who grapples with his various incarnations, highlighting human complexities.

The film’s narrative explores themes of identity and existence, as Akkie’s character acts as a grounding force for Pattinson’s portrayal of a man who can be easily replaced. ‘It’s fascinating how Nasha remains a singular force while Mickey is constantly replicated,’ she noted.

The intricate challenge of portraying a character involved in multiple narratives isn’t just a test for Pattinson, according to Ackie. ‘It could be jarring at first, distinguishing between different versions of Mickey, but Robert’s exceptional talent makes it easier for the rest of us to adapt and respond accordingly,’ she explained.

Ackie embraced the unique filming process, where Pattinson often switched between characters. She noted, ‘Initially, it was odd, but it became natural to react to what each iteration of Mickey brought to the table. There were times when we filmed scenes with both characters and had to adapt accordingly.’

Expectations around ‘Mickey 17’ have been high, particularly given Bong Joon Ho’s track record with films that intertwine humor and profound themes. ‘Bong is in a unique space right now,’ Ackie acknowledged. ‘He has earned the creative freedom to tell the stories he wants, effectively capturing the multiplicities of human experience.’

As ‘Mickey 17’ prepares for its release, audiences are eager to see how these elements of identity and complexity unfold. The film is now playing in theaters.
