Naomi Watts Great Dane Premiere Red Carpet

NEW YORK — Actress Naomi Watts and her 145-pound co-star, Bing the Great Dane, made a striking appearance on the crimson carpet at the premiere of ‘The Friend’ on March 27, 2025. Directed by Scott McGehee and based on Sigrid Nunez’s 2018 novel, the film explores the life of a struggling writer whose life is transformed after inheriting a beloved pet dog.

Watts, 56, donned a whimsical white gown featuring black fur spots, styled by Jeanann Williams, which echoed her co-star’s own coat. The gown, known as the ‘Domino,’ was introduced during the Spring-Summer 2025 Paris couture shows and showcases a contemporary design with a high cowl neck and asymmetrical waistline.

The thematic pairing of Watts and Bing, who appeared equally styled for the occasion, represents a novel take on method dressing, reminiscent of trends that have recently swept the red carpet. As celebrity stylists increasingly coordinate outfits with on-screen characters, this fashion choice has generated mixed responses in the industry.

During the premiere, Watts expressed her admiration for Bing, stating, ‘Every day he brought something special and surprised us every step of the way.’ This sentiment highlights the actress’s connection with her canine co-star, essential in the film that portrays the bond between the protagonist, Iris, played by Watts, and her deceased friend’s Great Dane, Apollo.

The film will become available in U.S. theaters on March 28, followed by an April 25 release in the UK. Bill Murray, who plays Walter, Iris’s mentor and best friend, also attended the premiere, showcasing the strong ensemble cast.

Amid the playful atmosphere on the red carpet, Watts’ 16-year-old child, Kai Schreiber, was present, showcasing their own stylish attire from Valentino‘s spring 2025 collection. Schreiber wore a cropped polka-dot blazer and a striking hot pink bustier top, adding flair to the evening.

This film premiere follows a growing trend in Hollywood where pets have become important figures on the red carpet. Similar to Messi, a border collie that performed at Cannes last year, Bing’s appearance at this premiere indicates the rising status of celebrity pets in film promotion.

As the spotlight shone on Watts and Bing, the event served as a reminder of the unique connections formed between animals and actors, both on and off screen.
