National Theatre Announces Cast for Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’
The National Theatre has revealed the complete casting lineup for its upcoming production of Oscar Wilde‘s famously witty play, “The Importance of Being Earnest.” This fresh revival is scheduled to run from November 20, 2024, to January 25, 2025, at the Lyttelton Theatre in London. The production is directed by Max Webster, marking his debut at the National Theatre.
The ensemble boasts a roster of distinguished actors. Richard Cant, recognized for his roles in “Stan & Ollie” and “Mary Queen of Scots,” is set to portray Reverend Canon Chasuble. The cast also includes Sharon D Clarke, noted for performances in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Doctor Who,” taking on the iconic role of Lady Bracknell. Ncuti Gatwa, known for his work in “Doctor Who” and “Sex Education,” will appear as Algernon Moncrieff, while Hugh Skinner of “W1A” and “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” fame will play Jack Worthing.
Additional cast members feature Amanda Lawrence from “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” as Miss Prism, Ronkẹ Adékọluẹ́jọ́ known for “Rain Dogs” as Gwendolen Fairfax, and Eliza Scanlen, recognized from “Little Women,” in the role of Cecily Cardew. Julian Bleach, who has credits in “Doctor Who” and “The Grinning Man,” will join the cast as Merriman and Lane.
The production team has also announced that “The Importance of Being Earnest” will be filmed live and released in cinemas worldwide on February 20, 2025. This cinematic presentation will be part of the NTLive program, with venue information available on the NTLive website.
The creative team backing this production includes set and costume designer Rae Smith, lighting designer Jon Clark, and sound designer Nicola T. Chang, among others. The crew is composed of experts such as movement director Carrie-Anne Ingrouille and intimacy coordinator Ingrid Mackinnon, ensuring that all aspects of the production meet high standards of theatrical excellence.
