Nations League 2023

The UEFA Nations League takes center stage once more, as the international break returns and countries across the continent enter into competitive matches. UEFA’s newest international adventure still divides opinion, but this season comes with the usual backup qualifying spots for the next major international men’s tournament—the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In practice, the four best group winners from the Nations League, who do not finish in the top two in World Cup qualifying groups, will earn another opportunity to reach the USA, Mexico, and Canada through playoffs. This competition phase will be crucial for many European teams striving to secure their World Cup dreams.

Scotland is the only British representative in League A this session. However, under the management of Steve Clarke, the team faces a challenging phase, needing a successful break to avoid immediate relegation. They have lost two matches in Group A1, and face injury concerns ahead of their games against Croatia and Portugal. Finishing last in their group would result in direct relegation, while a third-place finish might trigger a relegation playoff. Notably, the Scots have managed only a single win over the past year, spanning 14 games.

On a brighter note, Lee Carsley serves as the interim manager for England, who are dominating Group B2 with two wins from two matches. England is set to face Greece, another team with six points, followed by a match against Finland. Promotion back to League A appears promising, provided they maintain a 100 percent win record. Carsley has hinted at rostering new or differently-positioned players with the primary goal of securing promotion.

Wales, under Craig Bellamy‘s guidance, recently secured a goalless draw with Turkey and achieved a 2-1 victory over Montenegro, placing them second in Group B4. Logistics seem favorable as they prepare to face Iceland away and Montenegro at home, yet competition remains tight and results could sway from automatic promotion to a relegation playoff.

In Group C3, Michael O'Neill‘s team sits third, in a rare spot with no immediate threat or opportunity for playoff promotion or relegation. Upcoming matches against Belarus and Bulgaria will be stern challenges for the team.

In League A, Portugal, Italy, Germany, and Denmark currently lead their respective groups. Notably, Denmark is ahead of the European champions, Spain, but the two have yet to encounter each other. Germany and the Netherlands are to face off this week in Group A3, making for an intense competition among top football nations.

In further developments within the Nations League, Georgia currently leads their Group B, post-Euro 2024 performances. Conversely, teams such as Ukraine and Austria face the threat of relegation if improvements are not seen soon.

Further down the Nations League hierarchy, teams like Liechtenstein have continued to struggle significantly, not having secured a win in four years, while Andorra and San Marino secure surprising wins in the lower tiers.
