2025 Native Son Awards New York City

NEW YORK CITY, June 5, 2025 – The 2025 Native Son Awards will honor notable Black gay and queer men for their achievements and advocacy on June 11 in New York City. Among this year’s honorees are actor Tazewell, costume designer Sean Bankhead, multidisciplinary artist Derrick Adams, and National Black Justice Collective CEO Dr. David J. Johns.

Tazewell expressed his gratitude for the recognition, stating, “I’m deeply honored to receive this recognition at the Native Son Awards. This organization is incredibly close to my heart…” His work in the film Wicked earned him an Academy Award earlier this year, marking a significant achievement for Black artists in the industry.

The awards ceremony will showcase performances by GRAMMY-nominated singer Durand Bernarr and Deon Jones, a former contestant on The Voice. The evening will also include social impact moments led by past award recipients such as Rashad Robinson and Alphonso David, emphasizing the importance of Black and queer history.

Founded by media professional Emil Wilbekin, the Native Son movement aims to create a safe space for the Black gay community. The event, first held in 2016, serves as a fundraiser for Native Son’s ongoing initiatives that support advocacy and empowerment within the community.

<p“As we approach our 10th anniversary next year, it’s a moment to reflect on our growth and the urgent need for our work,” Wilbekin said. “Our community faces many challenges, and we are dedicated to supporting and amplifying Black gay and queer voices.”

The Native Son Awards will take place at IAC Building at 5:30 PM ET. Former CNN journalist Don Lemon will return as host for the third consecutive year.
