NCIS Star David McCallum Dies at 90, Remembered for Iconic Role as Dr. Ducky Mallard
NEW YORK, N.Y. — David McCallum, the Scottish-born actor best known for his role as Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard on the long-running CBS series NCIS, died of natural causes on September 25 at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He was 90 years old.
McCallum’s passing was confirmed by a CBS spokesperson, who stated that the actor was surrounded by family and friends at the time of his death. He had portrayed the beloved medical examiner and NCIS historian since the show’s premiere in 2003, becoming a cornerstone of the series.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, McCallum began his acting career in the 1950s, gaining fame for his role as Illya Kuryakin in the 1960s spy series The Man from U.N.C.L.E. His transition to NCIS introduced him to a new generation of fans, who admired his portrayal of the erudite and compassionate Dr. Mallard.
“David was a legend in the truest sense of the word,” said NCIS executive producer Steven D. Binder in a statement. “His talent, kindness, and professionalism were unmatched, and he brought so much depth to the character of Ducky. He will be deeply missed.”
McCallum’s death marks another loss for the NCIS family, following the passing of other cast members over the years. Annie Wersching, who appeared as Deputy DA Gail Walsh in a Season 8 episode, died in 2023 at the age of 45. Wersching was also known for her roles in 24, The Vampire Diaries, and The Last of Us.
Fans and colleagues took to social media to pay tribute to McCallum, with many recalling his warmth and dedication to his craft. “David was not only a brilliant actor but also a true gentleman,” tweeted former co-star Mark Harmon, who played Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS. “Working with him was an honor and a joy.”
McCallum is survived by his wife, Katherine Carpenter, and their five children. A private memorial service is planned, with details to be announced at a later date.
