Netflix’s ‘American Primeval’ Reclaims Top Spot, Outshines New Releases
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Netflix‘s gritty miniseries “American Primeval” has reclaimed the top spot on the streaming platform’s Top 10 list, just days after being temporarily dethroned by the second season of “XO, Kitty.” The series, which premiered on January 9, 2025, has become the top-performing new Netflix original of the year, outperforming even the highly anticipated “Squid Game” Season 2 in recent weeks.
“American Primeval,” starring Taylor Kitsch as the lead character Isaac, has garnered significant attention for its brutal storytelling and high viewership numbers. Its creator has hinted at the possibility of a prequel focusing on Isaac’s backstory. “We’re talking about it right now,” the creator said in a recent interview. “That’s the way we’d go if we do it, and I don’t know if we will, but that would be the way we would go.”
Meanwhile, “XO, Kitty,” a spinoff of Netflix’s “To All the Boys I've Loved Before” franchise, debuted at No. 1 but quickly fell to second place. The show, which features Noah Centineo reprising his role as Peter Kavinsky, has been praised for its nostalgic appeal and relatively low production costs. Anna Cathcart, who plays Kitty Song-Covey, shared her excitement about reuniting with Centineo for Season 2. “The best part is now getting to work together, but at a different stage of our characters’ lives,” Cathcart said during a behind-the-scenes interview.
Elsewhere on the Top 10 list, “Squid Game” Season 2 remains a strong contender at No. 3, while “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” holds steady at No. 5. The latter has become the best-performing “Walking Dead” series on Netflix to date. The romantic comedy “Younger,” now in its seventh season, continues to perform well at No. 6.
As Netflix prepares to release new content, the competition for the top spot remains fierce. Fans of “American Primeval” and “XO, Kitty” can expect updates on potential spin-offs and future seasons in the coming weeks.
