Netflix Pride And Prejudice Cast Announcement

Los Angeles, CA – Netflix has announced a new six-part limited series based on Jane Austen‘s beloved novel, ‘Pride and Prejudice.’ The series, which will begin production later this year in the U.K., stars Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet, Jack Lowden as Mr. Darcy, and Olivia Colman as Mrs. Bennet.

This adaptation is penned by Dolly Alderton, known for ‘Everything I Know About Love,’ and directed by Euros Lyn, recognized for his work on ‘Heartstopper.’ The project’s backing comes from Lookout Point and aims to present a classic and faithful rendition of Austen’s iconic text.

“Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story, and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it,” Alderton said in a statement. She emphasized that Austen’s narrative is essential in the romantic comedy genre, expressing her excitement for revisiting the well-loved tale. “With Euros Lyn directing our stellar cast, I am so excited to reintroduce these hilarious and complicated characters to those who count ‘Pride and Prejudice’ as their favorite book and those who are yet to meet their Lizzie and Mr. Darcy.”

Olivia Colman shared her enthusiasm for the role, stating, “Playing Elizabeth Bennet is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. To be able to bring this iconic character to life, alongside Olivia and Jack, with Dolly’s phenomenal scripts, is truly the greatest honor. I can’t wait for a new generation to fall in love with this story all over again.”

‘Pride and Prejudice,’ published in 1813, follows the journey of Elizabeth Bennet, one of five daughters in the Bennet family. The narrative encapsulates themes of class, marriage, and individual agency within the British Regency era. The pressures of societal expectations force the daughters to find suitable husbands to secure their futures.

Over the years, ‘Pride and Prejudice’ has seen numerous adaptations, including notable versions in 1995 with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, as well as the 2005 film starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen. Netflix previously adapted another Austen novel, ‘Persuasion,’ in 2022.

“Pride and Prejudice is the ultimate romantic comedy. Dolly’s fierce intelligence and enormous heart, twinned with her genuine love of the Austen novel means she is able to bring new insights while celebrating all that the generations of fans hold so dear,” said Mona Qureshi, director of U.K. content at Netflix. “The calibre of a cast led by Emma, Jack, and Olivia guarantees that this precious story is in the best possible hands.”
