Netflix Documentary Explores Intriguing Life of Martha Stewart
Netflix is set to release an in-depth documentary on the multifaceted life of Martha Stewart, shedding light on her evolution from a teenage model to a household name and America’s first self-made female billionaire. Directed by R.J. Cutler, known for acclaimed documentaries such as “The September Issue” and “Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry,” the film promises a candid look into Stewart’s life.
Stewart, a prominent figure in the world of lifestyle and home decor, candidly discusses the trials and tribulations she faced, both personally and professionally. A significant portion of the documentary addresses her 2004 conviction for insider trading, which led to a dramatic chapter in her life. In the film, Stewart recalls, “I was a trophy for these idiots. Those prosecutors should’ve been put in a Cuisinart and turned on high.”
The revelations do not stop there. Stewart also opens up about her personal life, including an affair during her marriage to Andy Stewart, her husband of nearly three decades. Reflecting on the past, she advises, “Young women, listen to my advice, if you’re married and your husband starts to cheat on you, he’s a piece of s—. Get out of that marriage.” However, she admits, “Yeah, but I don’t think Andy ever knew about that.”
Cutler’s documentary highlights Stewart’s return to prominence after serving time in federal prison. Her resilience is evident as she states, “The cookie-cutter house and the cookie-cutter life was not for me. I just could’ve been a miserable, has-been housewife, but I didn’t let that happen to myself.”
The film provides a detailed account of Stewart’s influence, tracing her journey from her early days in the fashion industry to becoming a definitive voice in lifestyle and entrepreneurship. Her legacy as the original influencer is parsed through numerous interviews with Stewart and her closest confidants.
“Martha” will be available for streaming on Netflix starting October 30, offering audiences an unprecedented glimpse into the life of the woman who transformed American domesticity into a billion-dollar brand.
