Netflix Unveils New Limited Series ‘The Decameron’
Netflix has launched a new limited series titled ‘The Decameron,’ inspired by the 14th-century work by Bocaccio. Created by Kathleen Jordan, known for ‘Teenage Bounty Hunters,’ this modern adaptation takes a fresh approach to the original text.
Instead of using the storytelling format where characters tell tales to pass the time, Jordan’s version focuses completely on the Florentine nobles and their servants trapped in a villa during a plague. Viewers may find familiar vibes reminiscent of ‘The White Lotus‘ as it captures chaos in a confined setting.
While ‘The Decameron’ may not reach the same heights as ‘The White Lotus,’ the show offers a humorous take and features a talented ensemble cast. With the help of executive producer Jenji Kohan, famous for ‘Orange Is the New Black,’ the series cleverly explores the dynamics among the quarantined characters.
The plot follows a group of aristocrats, including Pampinea, played by Zosia Mamet, who is in a desperate race to secure her future while navigating a world of deception and rivalry. Meanwhile, her maid Misia, portrayed by Saoirse-Monica Jackson, provides comic relief amidst the tension.
As the story progresses, we’re introduced to several other intriguing characters, including Licisca, who isn’t afraid to take matters into her own hands, and the over-the-top doctor Dioneo. It’s a mix filled with humor, class struggles, and unexpected twists.
Filmed on location outside Rome, ‘The Decameron’ maintains a historical setting while liberally interpreting its themes. The show avoids heavy references to modern-day isolation, instead focusing on timeless topics like social status and lust.
All eight episodes are now available to stream on Netflix, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in a world full of chaos, humor, and social commentary.
