Park City, Utah – “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You,” a dark comedy directed by Mary Bronstein, delves into the chaos and struggles of motherhood. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and explores challenges faced by mothers without the fear of judgment.

The film follows Linda (played by Rose Byrne), a mother grappling with her daughter’s chronic illness while managing the chaos of her life. During a challenging few days, Linda’s world unravels when a hole appears in her apartment ceiling, leading to a series of comedic misfortunes. With her husband, a ship captain, away at sea, Linda must juggle repairs and medical appointments for her daughter, played by Delaney Quinn.

Linda’s story is compounded by various setbacks, including a family emergency involving a contractor and criticism from a doctor (Bronstein) regarding her daughter’s weight. The film paints a relentless picture of maters, with Linda receiving little support from her busy husband, Charles (Christian Slater), who is mostly heard via phone.

Byrne’s performance stands out as she embodies both the humor and tragedy of her situation. Her character’s resilience shines through despite nonstop obstacles, showcasing Linda’s role as a therapist while also confronting her emotional turmoil. Throughout the film, Linda’s daughter remains largely unnamed and unseen, emphasizing the film’s commentary on the exhausting nature of maternal bonds.

Bronstein cleverly plays Linda’s antagonist, illustrating the internal struggles mothers can face. As Linda navigates her life, she often finds herself at a motel for relief, forming unpredictable connections with others, including a motel superintendent played by A$AP Rocky.

Critics have noted the film’s aesthetic, likening it to the works of the Safdie brothers, known for their intense narratives. “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” challenges conventions of cinema, weaving moments of despair and dark humor through Bronstein’s unique storytelling.

Ultimately, the film offers a fresh perspective on motherhood as it blends painful truths with comedic elements. The intermingling of humor and horror highlights the complicated emotional landscape that many mothers navigate.
