New Documentary ‘Celtics City’ Explores Boston’s Legendary NBA Franchise

BOSTON, Mass. — The new HBO Original sports documentary titled ‘Celtics City‘ premieres Monday, March 3, at 9 p.m. ET, diving deep into the history of the Boston Celtics, the NBA’s most decorated franchise. The nine-episode series covers the team’s journey from its founding to last year’s championship victory.
The documentary recounts notable rivalries, monumental moments, and social movements that have influenced the Celtics’ legacy. It promises a comprehensive look at how these elements shaped not only the team but also the city of Boston.
Produced by Bill Simmons, the series features interviews with notable Celtics legends such as Bob Cousy, Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish, Jaylen Brown, and Jayson Tatum. “This documentary captures the soul of the Celtics, revealing what they mean to Boston and beyond,” said Simmons in a release. “The stories told are interwoven with the fabric of the city, making it a quintessential viewing experience for sports fans.”
The first episode, airing March 3, explores the Celtics’ origins, focusing on Red Auerbach’s historic decision to draft Chuck Cooper, the NBA’s first Black player. As the docuseries progresses, it will tackle pivotal eras in Celtics history, including their rise during the civil rights movement and the introduction of superstar Larry Bird in 1979.
Mazzulla also highlighted the impact of the series during a recent interview. “Watching the history of what this franchise has gone through puts everything into perspective. It reinforces the heavy responsibility we have in coaching this iconic team,” he said.
