A Deadly American Marriage Documentary

Los Angeles, CA — A new documentary titled “A Deadly American Marriage” delves into the unresolved murder case of Jason Corbett, who was killed on August 2, 2015. Directed by Jessica Burgess and Jenny Popplewell, the film raises questions about the actions of his wife, Molly Corbett, and father-in-law, Thomas Martens, who claimed self-defense during the fatal incident.

After a long investigation, Molly and Thomas were convicted of second-degree murder in 2017. However, their convictions were overturned on appeal, leading them to plead no contest and guilty to voluntary manslaughter in early 2023. This legal outcome left many unresolved questions about the circumstances surrounding Jason’s death.

“This case demonstrates how complex the American justice system is,” the directors told Tudum. “Where is the truth? Where are the lies? Where is justice? This documentary demonstrates that it’s not clear-cut.” The filmmakers approached both families with care, emphasizing objectivity throughout the production. “For the film to remain objective and balanced, we never discussed information we learned with either side,” they stated.

The documentary captures the emotional aftermath of Jason’s death, which devastated both the Corbett and Martens families. Jason’s children, Jack and Sarah, face ongoing custody disputes as their father’s sister and brother-in-law, named as guardians in Jason’s will, seek custody amid a complex family dynamic.

“Jack and Sarah were two Irish citizens but had made roots in America with a woman they loved and called Mom,” said Burgess and Popplewell. “An American court ruled that they should grow up surrounded by Jason’s family in Ireland.” Jack and Sarah expressed their approval of the court’s decision, highlighting their desire for stability.

The film also emphasizes the lasting emotional impact on the children, illustrating their experiences leading up to court proceedings. In one poignant scene, Jack suggested listening to their father’s favorite song during a car ride, showcasing their shared grief and unity.

Meanwhile, Molly and Thomas reflect on their time in prison. “Molly and Tom’s time in prison was devastating for them and all who loved and supported them,” the directors noted. “They don’t believe they should have ever been convicted, let alone received a custodial sentence.” The film is now available for streaming on Netflix.
