New Documentary Explores Sally Ride’s Love Life with Tam O’Shaughnessy

Los Angeles, California – A new documentary titled Sally uncovers the hidden love story of astronaut Sally Ride and her partner Tam O’Shaughnessy. The film, which premiered at Sundance in January 2025, will debut on National Geographic on June 16 and stream on Disney+ starting June 17. It examines Ride’s groundbreaking achievements as the first American woman in space alongside her long-term romance with O’Shaughnessy.
Ride, who made history by flying to space in 1983, shared 27 years of companionship with O’Shaughnessy. Despite their deep bond, the couple kept their relationship private during Ride’s life. O’Shaughnessy recalls a poignant conversation with Ride just ten days before her death from pancreatic cancer in 2012 at the age of 61. “I was holding sort of a public celebration of her life… And it was like, ‘So who am I?’” she said.
Following Ride’s passing, O’Shaughnessy decided to share their story publicly. “Our friends and family knew, and people guessed. It didn’t feel honest,” she stated. The documentary features intimate insights from O’Shaughnessy, who hopes to help others understand the true nature of their relationship. Director Cristina Costantini noted that the film blends archival footage, animation, and reenactments inspired by O’Shaughnessy’s recollections due to the couple’s limited photographs together.
The film portrays Sally Ride not just as a pioneering astronaut but as a deeply human individual with complex personal ties. O’Shaughnessy reflected on the impact of sharing these intimate moments, stating she got emotional during her interview segments. “It just got me all the way through to my heart and guts,” she shared.
Overall, Sally aims to present a fuller picture of Ride’s life, emphasizing her legacy and the profound love she shared with O’Shaughnessy.
