NEW YORK, NY — A new documentary titled “Trapped: What Is Happening to Wendy Williams” is set to premiere on Investigation Discovery on May 19, 2025. The film takes an in-depth look at the former talk show host’s health challenges and the #FreeWendy movement, which advocates for her release from a court-ordered guardianship imposed in 2022.

The documentary aims to provide a fresh perspective on Williams’ situation, focusing on her fans’ efforts to grant her the autonomy they believe she deserves. Investigation Discovery has stated that the film will shed light on various aspects of her life, including allegations against her ex-husband, Kevin Hunter, and the health issues that have drawn public scrutiny.

According to a release from the network, Williams has been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia and aphasia, conditions that affect communication and behavior. Despite this, her supporters argue that she should regain control over her life, leading to the emergence of the #FreeWendy movement.

The documentary features interviews with legal experts, as well as friends and family who support Williams and her plight. It also includes reactions from fans and advocates on social media, particularly emphasizing the movement’s growth and its parallels to other high-profile cases, such as Britney Spears‘ conservatorship.

Wendy Williams retired from her talk show in 2022 and was subsequently placed under guardianship after concerns about her financial activity were raised. Her niece, Alex Finnie, and other family members have echoed concerns regarding the restrictive nature of this guardianship, highlighting Williams’ emotional distress over the situation.

As anticipation builds for the documentary, fans are eagerly engaging with its promotional material, including trailers that hint at revelations about her health and the conditions of her guardianship.

The film not only aims to document Williams’ challenging circumstances but also aspires to fuel further discussions about the guardianship system and the treatment of public figures facing similar predicaments.

“Trapped: What Is Happening to Wendy Williams” will debut at 8 p.m. E.T. and will be available for streaming on Max afterward.
