New Horror Film ‘The Undertone’ Wraps Production Featuring Unique Lead Role

TORONTO, Canada — Canadian film companies Slaterverse Pictures and Black Fawn Films have completed production on the horror feature film, The Undertone, starring Nina Kiri, known for her role in The Handmaid's Tale. The film, directed by Ian Tuason in his feature debut, follows a unique narrative centered around a podcast host who becomes entangled in her own horrifying story.
The plot revolves around Kiri’s character, Evy, who takes care of her dying mother while hosting an ‘all-things-creepy’ podcast. As she receives ten audio recordings from a young pregnant couple experiencing strange paranormal phenomena, she discovers a chilling connection to her own life. Each new recording challenges her sanity and pulls her deeper into an inescapable fate.
Despite being the only character shown on-screen, Evy’s emotional journey unfolds as the film uses sound design to enhance the horror experience. ‘With The Undertone, I’m crafting a horror experience that doesn’t just evoke fear—it engulfs you in it, using immersive sound design to make silence as terrifying as the unknown,’ said Tuason. He adds that the film deeply explores themes of fear, guilt, and isolation inspired by his own experiences as a caregiver.
The film is produced by Dan Slater and Cody Calahan, with Chad Archibald, Daril Fannin, Brit MacRae, Anthony Eu, Douglas Lee, Al Akdari, Charles Bern, Mathew Sterling, David Sproat, and Ian Tuason serving as executive producers. This project marks the first collaboration between Slaterverse Pictures, Black Fawn Films, and KINO Studios.
‘We’re always looking for projects that stand out and have a meaningful story to tell,’ Calahan said. ‘Ian has a unique vision, breaking free from tradition to create a horror experience that’s as bold as it is unnerving.’
This production marks the beginning of a multi-film collaboration between KINO Studios and Black Fawn Films, aiming to produce more horror and thriller films in the future. Daril Fannin emphasized the film’s psychological horror elements, stating, ‘The Undertone is an unsettling, deeply psychological horror that lingers long after the credits roll. With Nina Kiri as our lead, we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect actor to bring this terrifying tale to life.’
