New Netflix Series ‘Pulse’ Explores High-Stakes Medical Drama Amid Hurricane Chaos

LOS ANGELES, CA — The new medical drama series ‘Pulse‘ debuted on Netflix on April 3, 2025, featuring Willa Fitzgerald as Dr. Danielle “Danny” Simms, a third-year resident at a Miami trauma center facing intense personal and professional challenges. The show explores the complexities of a suspended head doctor and the ensuing chaos within the hospital as a hurricane approaches.
‘Pulse’ follows Dr. Danny Simms, who unexpectedly steps into a leadership role when Chief Resident Dr. Xander Phillips, portrayed by Colin Woodell, is suspended due to a sexual misconduct investigation. The series captures the turmoil within the hospital as patients flood in during the hurricane while personal relationships clash with professional duties.
The series has been described as a mix of intense medical emergencies and intricate romantic entanglements among its cast, which includes Jessie T. Usher, Tom Cole, and Jessy Yates. ‘The landscape of their personal lives complicates the high-stakes environment of emergency medicine,’ said co-showrunner and executive producer Zoe Robyn.
Fitzgerald, who stars in her first lead role in a major series, has previously appeared in projects like ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ and ‘Scream: The TV Series.’ Discussing her character, she described Danny as “incredibly resilient and driven.” Fitzgerald adds that Danny’s journey will showcase her struggle with her past and present relationships.
Colin Woodell’s character, Xander, represents both a professional rival and a past lover for Danny. Their tumultuous relationship is a focal point of the show, as they navigate feelings of betrayal and ambition amidst catastrophic circumstances. ‘We’re able to showcase the fine line between love and professional ethics in a healthcare setting,’ Woodell noted.
The show’s narrative not only dives into medical emergencies but also emphasizes the interpersonal dynamics among the staff. With power cuts and communication difficulties due to the hurricane, the characters must rely on each other in life-or-death situations.
In a phone interview, Fitzgerald expressed her excitement about her role in ‘Pulse’: “It allows for an exploration of themes that are relatable, like the balance between ambition and personal sacrifice.” The creative team, alongside executive producer Carlton Cuse, aims to redefine the medical drama genre, bringing fresh perspectives on familiar tropes.
Pulse also showcases the dualism of human emotion—while life is at stake in the operating room, the chaos outstrips the medical challenges, pushing characters to confront their inner demons. Set within the hectic world of emergency medicine, it promises to be a rollercoaster of emotions and revelations.
The show aims to take viewers on a ride that mirrors the chaos of real-life emergency situations, with characters portrayed by a talented ensemble that brings depth to their roles. Each episode leads viewers deeper into the personal and professional conflicts faced by the characters, culminating in a gripping storytelling experience.
