New Syfy Series ‘Revival’ Offers a Unique Take on Zombies

Wausau, Wisconsin – The new Syfy series ‘Revival‘ premiered on June 12, presenting a fresh twist on the zombie genre. Based on the Image Comics title by Tim Seeley and Mike Norton, the show avoids traditional horror elements, instead focusing on mystery and character-driven plots as the dead return to life.
In Wausau, a small town turned upside down, recently deceased individuals rise inexplicably on what the locals call ‘Revival Day.’ This sudden event poses myriad challenges for the community, particularly for Sheriff Wayne Cypress, played by David James Elliott, and his daughter Dana, portrayed by Melanie Scrofano. Dana is a police officer grappling with her responsibilities, especially as she was planning to move to Chicago with her son Cooper.
Unlike typical zombies, those in ‘Revival’ retain their memories and identities, adding layers of complexity to their interactions. Their return sparks confusion as students, like Jordan, portrayed by Flora McInroy, return to school, and town officials, including Mayor Dillisch (Conrad Coates), scramble to maintain order.
In response to the chaos, the government quarantines Wausau and dispatches Ibrahim Ramin (Andy McQueen), a CDC specialist, to investigate this supernatural phenomenon. As Dana delves deeper into the mystery, she discovers gruesome links between the revivers and new murders, leading to personal confrontations as she seeks answers.
Meanwhile, Dana’s younger sister Em (Romy Weltman) struggles with her issues, and her interactions with rock singer Rhodey (Kaleb Horn) introduce a subplot of romance and tension amid the supernatural occurrences. Similarly, the narrative showcases social issues—highlighting discrimination faced by the ‘revivers’ in the wake of their return.
Creators Aaron B. Koontz and Luke Boyce aim to create a mix of suspense and humor, bringing viewers character-driven storytelling filled with intrigue. The show has been noted for its significant performances, particularly from Scrofano, contributing to its appealing character dynamics.
Set against the eerie backdrop of a town grappling with the uncanny, ‘Revival’ aims to reveal deeper truths as it develops. With its unique take on a saturated genre, the series promises to engage audiences with plots that combine humor, mystery, and the supernatural.
