New York City’s Easter Parade Boasts Colorful Hats and Festive Atmosphere

NEW YORK, NY – The annual Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival is set to brighten Fifth Avenue this Sunday, April 20, 2025, as participants don their most elaborate and colorful headwear for the beloved springtime tradition. The festivities begin promptly at 10 a.m., following the morning Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral, and last until around 4 p.m.
The parade, which dates back to the 1870s, draws crowds eager to showcase their creativity, with costumes ranging from classic bonnets to whimsical interpretations of Easter icons. Organizers suggest that the ideal viewing spot is between 50th and 51st Streets, near the cathedral, where the event has been anchored for over a century.
Local resident Julie Stanton, 32, who plans to participate this year, expressed her excitement: "It’s such a fun way to celebrate Easter. The creativity people show with their hats is just incredible. I can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with!"
Traditionally, the parade allows everyone, from families to pets, to join in the celebration, making it a truly inclusive event. Participants are encouraged to wear their finest spring attire, yet the highlight remains the extravagant bonnets. Past parades have seen hats decorated with flowers, feathers, and even miniatures of iconic landmarks.
In addition to the parade, St. Patrick’s Cathedral will host several Masses throughout Easter Sunday, with the first starting at 7 a.m. and the final service at 5:30 p.m. The 10 a.m. Mass requires tickets, while the 4 p.m. service will be held in Spanish.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, has participated in the Holy Week celebrations, with events leading up to Easter Sunday including the Way of the Cross procession on Good Friday. He noted the importance of tradition and community spirit during these significant days.
As participants gear up for the parade, weather forecasts look promising with expected highs around 68 degrees, perfect for a day of festivities. Official reports indicate a mix of clouds and sun, setting the stage for a joyful celebration on Fifth Avenue.
For anyone looking to experience the artistry and exuberance of Easter in New York City, the Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival offers a chance to witness the vibrant cultural tapestry of the city. Whether watching from the sidelines or marching proudly with a festive hat, the parade promises lively fun for all.
