New York Times’ Connections Game Gains Popularity Among Word Game Enthusiasts

The New York Times‘ daily word game, Connections, has become a favorite among puzzle enthusiasts since its launch. The game, which challenges players to group 16 words into four categories based on shared themes, offers a fresh puzzle every day at midnight. Players can access the game through the New York Times website or its Games app.

Connections requires players to identify links between words, such as items you can click, names for research study participants, or words preceded by a body part. Each group is color-coded, with yellow being the easiest and purple the most challenging. The game allows players to shuffle words to help spot connections, but incorrect guesses cost lives. Players lose after four mistakes.

Kris Holt, a writer who covers video games and word games, shared his experience with the game in a recent column. “I probably should have had a perfect game today but alas,” Holt wrote. “My win streak is up to four.” Holt also highlighted the game’s social aspect, encouraging players to join a discussion group to share strategies and feedback.

The game’s popularity has led to the creation of an archive for NYT All Access or Games subscribers, allowing players to revisit past puzzles. Holt noted that hints and answers for each game can often be found online, making it easier for players to improve their skills.

In addition to Connections, the New York Times has introduced a Sports Edition of the game, currently in beta testing. This version focuses on sports-related themes, such as outcomes in an at-bat or US soccer goalkeepers. Gael Cooper, a CNET editor, described the Sports Edition as a mix of regular words and names, adding an extra layer of challenge.

As Connections continues to grow in popularity, it joins other New York Times games like Wordle and the Mini Crossword in captivating players worldwide. The game’s blend of logic, vocabulary, and creativity ensures its place as a staple in the daily routines of word game enthusiasts.
