New Zealand Vs Sri Lanka Odi Hamilton 2025

New Zealand secured a dominant 113-run victory over Sri Lanka in a rain-affected second ODI at Seddon Park in Hamilton on January 8, 2025. The match, reduced to 37 overs per side due to a two-and-a-half-hour rain delay, saw New Zealand post a competitive total of 255 for 9, anchored by a 112-run partnership between Rachin Ravindra (79) and Mark Chapman (62). Sri Lanka’s chase faltered early, collapsing to 22 for 4 within five overs, and they were eventually bowled out for 142 in 30.2 overs.

New Zealand’s innings was built on a solid foundation laid by Ravindra and Chapman, who made scoring look effortless. Ravindra struck 79 off 63 balls, including a six to reach his half-century, while Chapman scored 62 off 52, with 46 of his runs coming on the leg side. Despite a late stumble, losing five wickets in the final 10 overs, New Zealand’s total proved more than enough.

Sri Lanka’s top order crumbled under pressure, with Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, and Avishka Fernando falling cheaply. Kamindu Mendis provided some resistance with a fighting 64, but the lack of support from other batters left Sri Lanka well short of their target. New Zealand’s bowlers, led by Ben O'Rourke (3 for 31) and Jacob Duffy (2 for 30), capitalized on the early breakthroughs to dismantle the Sri Lankan lineup.

The match also featured standout fielding moments, including a spectacular catch by Nathan Smith near the boundary to dismiss Eshan Malinga. Sri Lanka’s fielding, while commendable, couldn’t compensate for their batting woes. Maheesh Theekshana‘s four-wicket haul, including a hat-trick, was a rare highlight for the visitors.

With this win, New Zealand took an unassailable lead in the series, despite missing several key players due to injuries and absences. Sri Lanka, at full strength, continue to struggle with their top-order batting, a recurring issue that has plagued them in recent matches.
