NFL Draft 2025: Teams Make Surprising Picks in First Round

GREEN BAY, Wis. — In a surprising twist during the 2025 NFL Draft, the Atlanta Falcons opted for linebacker Jalon Walker with the No. 15 pick, shoring up the team’s defense and solidifying Michael Penix Jr. as their starting quarterback.
The Green Bay Packers‘ decision to select Texas wide receiver Matthew Golden with the No. 24 pick marks a significant change for the franchise. This is the first time the team has taken a wide receiver in the first round since 2002, an unusual streak that has become a running joke among fans.
Meanwhile, Cam Ward, a former zero-star recruit who transferred from Incarnate Word to Washington State and then Miami, has made a remarkable rise. Ward expressed confidence following his selection, stating, “They’re getting a dog, somebody who is willing to do anything to put the team and themselves in situations to win.” His determination and faith helped drive him to this success.
The Pittsburgh Steelers chose Oregon‘s Derrick Harmon, the best defensive tackle in the draft, to address their quarterback gap. Harmon was noted for his exceptional pass-rush capabilities, leading the NCAA in hurries last season.
Additionally, Seattle drafted Grey Zabel, an offensive lineman out of North Dakota State, with the 18th pick. Zabel’s versatility and performance at the Senior Bowl garnered praise from NFL analysts, with some calling him a potential plug-and-play option.
The Las Vegas Raiders added running back Ashton Jeanty, who finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting. His impressive performance at Boise State included an outstanding ability to break tackles and gain yards after contact, making him a valuable asset in the Raiders’ new offensive lineup.
On the defensive side, the New York Giants made a strategic first-round move by selecting Abdul Carter with the No. 3 overall pick. Carter is expected to enhance the Giants’ pass rush significantly this season.
As the draft progressed, Shedeur Sanders, widely discussed as a first-round pick, continued to slide down the board. The Pittsburgh Steelers were eyed as a potential landing spot for him at No. 21, raising questions about their long-term plans at quarterback.
As the first round came to a close, it was clear the 2025 NFL Draft featured unexpected selections and pivotal moments for multiple franchises, setting the stage for an exciting upcoming season in the NFL.
