NFL fines Christian McCaffrey for helmet use during Jaguars game

San Francisco, CA — The NFL has fined 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey $23,186 for an illegal helmet use during a Week 4 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Levi's Stadium. The incident occurred in the third quarter when McCaffrey led with his helmet while attempting to tackle Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd, who had just intercepted a pass.
The fine was first reported by NFL insider Tom Pelissero on his official X account. He stated, “This is a new one: The NFL fined #49ers star RB Christian McCaffrey $23,186 for use of the helmet on this attempted tackle of #Jaguars LB Devin Lloyd last week.”
Despite McCaffrey’s effort, the 49ers lost the game 26-21 to the Jaguars, marking their only defeat of the season so far. McCaffrey did not receive a penalty for the incident during the game, but the league viewed his actions as a violation of their safety protocols for tackling.
In a statement, the NFL explained that since McCaffrey was acting as a defender after a change in possession, he was subject to the same rules that apply to defensive players using their helmets improperly. The league has made it clear that player safety is a top priority, especially regarding helmet usage during tackles.
McCaffrey, a three-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro, has played a crucial role in the 49ers’ season. After the loss to the Jaguars, the team rebounded with a thrilling overtime victory against the Los Angeles Rams, improving their record to 4-1 and maintaining first place in the NFC West.
Through five games this season, McCaffrey has accumulated 669 scrimmage yards and three touchdowns, although he is still seeking his first rushing touchdown of 2025.
