LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Nicolas Cage‘s 2022 meta-comedy “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” has found new life on Netflix, climbing to the fourth spot on the platform’s U.S. most-watched film charts just one day after its debut on Jan. 16, 2025. The film, which parodies Cage’s own career and filmography, stars the actor as a fictionalized version of himself alongside Pedro Pascal as a dangerous superfan.

Directed by Tom Gormican, the movie follows Cage as he accepts a $1 million offer to attend the birthday of Javi Gutiérrez (Pascal), only to be recruited by the CIA to investigate Gutiérrez’s alleged criminal activities. The film blends action, comedy, and self-referential humor, with Cage channeling his iconic on-screen personas to save himself and his loved ones.

Despite its modest box office performance during its theatrical run, grossing $29 million worldwide against a $30 million budget, the film has been a critical success. It holds an 87% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of Cage’s highest-rated films in recent years. Critics praised Cage’s performance, with /Film’s Jacob Hall describing it as “often nuanced, generally restrained, and painfully, awkwardly human.”

Netflix’s streaming platform has given the film a second chance, with viewers embracing its meta-comedy stylings. According to FlixPatrol, a site that aggregates streaming data, the film debuted at number four on the U.S. charts on Jan. 17, 2025. It now faces competition from the French action film “Ad Vitam” and the Minions-led “Despicable Me” series, which currently occupy the top three spots.

The film’s cast also includes Sharon Horgan, Ike Barinholtz, Alessandra Mastronardi, Jacob Scipio, Lily Sheen, Neil Patrick Harris, and Tiffany Haddish. Gormican co-wrote the script with Kevin Etten, with whom he is collaborating again for the upcoming “Anaconda” reboot starring Paul Rudd and Jack Black.

“The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” balances its meta-comedy with genuine heart, as Cage’s character reflects on his career and legacy. The film is filled with Easter eggs referencing Cage’s past roles, particularly in classics like “Face/Off.” Its success on Netflix highlights the platform’s ability to revitalize films that may have been overlooked during their theatrical release.

As of Jan. 17, 2025, the film continues to gain traction, with the potential to climb higher on the charts. Its resurgence is a testament to Cage’s enduring appeal and the film’s unique blend of humor, action, and self-awareness.
